Don't know where the 'Universal' came from, because this is quite a specialist tool. In the instructions it says it's for cutting "..soft, flexible materials, up to 6mm thick", and it does this really well. The cutter is like a sharpened 50 pence coin, which slices against a spring-loaded plate in the shoe (almost like rotary scissors). Because it slits material rather than sawing it, if you cut ridgid sheets, the blade will jam. A toothed saw cuts itself a slot for the blade to fit in, but this blade needs the material to flex out of its way. I'm using it to cut felt. I was cutting it with scissors, which was really hard work. With this tool the roughing-out is very easy, and quicker. Because I'm cutting curves which need to be super-accurate, I'm still doing the final trim with scissors, but straight lines are easy, and with more practice, I hope to be able to do all the cutting with this tool. This review is from: Bosch XEO 1 Lithium-Ion Universal Cutter (DIY & Tools) The cutter is lightweight, comfortable in the hand and easy to use. It cut six layers of cotton drill without a problem. I found the speed a bit slow, more of a trundle than a whizz but it does the job. The tin box in which the cutter arrives is very good, excellent for storage and neat enough to keep at the back of the cutting bench. On the down side, the slipper plate could do with being wider - it's very easy to hold the machine so that the blade is off-true and not 90' to the bench. This causes fabric to catch in the back of the blade and needs care to avoid. The safety button needs to be pressed and held in the 'use' position all the time the cutter is being used, which makes my hand ache a bit after a while. But I'm pleased with the machine and pleased I bought it. |
